COUGAR (Felis concolor) AKA    Catamount, American ghost, Puma, Panther, American Lion.
Cougars are the largest of North America's wild cats. Adult males average from 140 - 160 lb.
and females weigh from 90 to 110 lb. From nose to tip of tail, a large cougar may be as long as 10ft.
Adults grade in color from yellow through reddish brown to gray, with a light belly chin and throat.
They have short black ears and a long rounded tail tipped with black. They do not have a specific
breeding season. Although most kittens are born in late winter or midsummer, young can be
produced at any time. Two to four kittens are born in a hidden den. Kittens are yellowish spotted
with brown. The female alone raises her young. Males have been known to kill their own offspring.
Cubs will eat meat as early as 6 weeks and nurse 3 or more months and become
independent at 2 years. The cougar is the second best jumper of the large cats, with jumping
distances up to 20 feet. They have been seen jump 18 feet straight up a tree! Its long tail accounts for
about 1/3 of the total body length. The cougar cannot roar, but it can purr. Its unusually beautiful
facial markings also make this big cat very distinctive. The cougar is the most widely distributed
of any of America's cats. At one time the range for this solitary cat covered
Canada, North, Central and South America.
